Two Unrelated Links That May Be of Interest

Earlier this week, I saw the movie Young Adult with Charlize Theron. Charlize plays a 37-year-old writer who is intent on going back to her small hometown to reconnect with a boyfriend, who just happens to be married and have a new baby. I wanted to bring the movie to your attention because the character Charlize plays, Mavis Gary, is so much like the self-centered, narcissistic friends that are often described here. Take a look at my review on Life Goes Strong and see if the movie sounds like it may be of interest.

On a totally different topic, I listened to a captivating discussion on Slate, called Call Me Back When You’re Out of the Bathroom, which raises the etiquette question of whether it’s okay to speak to a friend while you are indisposed. I think you’ll enjoy it. What do you think? Does it have more to do with the quality of your relationship or is it simply a no-no?

Cheers, Irene

I have two friends who call me when they’re on the toilet…or go to the toilet when they’re on the phone with me. I’m okay with it now but I was initially shocked. I, by contrast, do not use the bathroom when I’m on the phone with friends.

Good to keep in mind during our daily encounters:
Half the harm that is done in this world
Is due to people who want to feel important.
They don’t mean to do harm
but the harm does not interest them.
Or they do not see it, or they justify it
Because they are absorbed in the endless struggle
    to think well of themselves.
    T. S. Eliot
