Journalist Janna Farley tells the story of a group, Sioux Falls Social Singles, designed for single people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, which meets weekly for Friday night dinners and coffee on Sundays. The organization provides opportunities for single people to connect and find friends.

In writing the article, Janna interviewed The Friendship Doctor:

Joining a singles group or other group of like-minded people can help, says Irene S. Levine, a professor of psychiatry at New York University’s School of Medicine and producer of www.TheFriendshipBlog.com, a blog where she gives advice to those seeking help with friendships.

“Often, the more commonalities there are between two people, the easier it is to connect because it allows conversation to flow more naturally,” Levine says. “There are fewer reasons to self-censor what to talk about or be guarded about what to say. Especially at the beginning stages of a relationship, it’s comfortable to begin speaking about shared circumstances, history or interests.”
