The first month-long celebration of National Women’s Friendship Month (NWFM) is finally here. How are you celebrating?

This year for NWFM, Kappa Delta Sorority (founders of the event) are focusing on “confidence” – how friends give us the confidence to pursue our dreams. They’ve long said that our women friends are our loudest cheerleaders and our most compassionate confidantes. Remember to thank a friend this month for her support and encouragement. And don’t forget to offer encouragement to your girlfriends. When we build confidence in one another, the world is a better place for everyone.

Clinical evidence shows the strength of friendships can increase positive emotions and improve our health and well-being. We live richer, fuller, even longer lives as a result of our friendships, experts say.

The happiness of our friends is infectious, according to researchers at Harvard and the University of California. In a study that measured the happiness of nearly 5,000 individuals over a period of 20 years, reports showed that when an individual was happy it spread through their network of friends, and their friends’ friends, and the measurable effect could last for up to a year.

Friends can be our best weapon in times of adversity, as they strengthen our resolve. One study asked people to rate the gradient of a hill, and to anticipate how difficult they would find it to climb. People who rated the hill in the presence of a friend saw the slope as less steep – and the closer they felt to the friend they were with, the easier the climb appeared.

“Having an intimate and supportive relationship with at least one female friend is vital to every woman’s physical health and emotional well-being,” says Irene S. Levine, Ph.D., professor at NYU School of Medicine and author of Best Friends Forever: Surviving a Breakup with Your Best Friend (Overlook Press, 2009).

“Good friends expose us to new ideas and experiences that fundamentally alter the course of our lives and help us grow. In a hectic world where women are expected to multi-task 24/7, Women’s Friendship Month is a wonderful reminder to slow down and reflect on the importance of these life-affirming ties.”

Plan some time to get together with your girlfriends to celebrate the power of female friendships. Here are some ideas:

  • Plan a girls-only night out or weekend getaway.
  • Meet for brunch or dinner at a favorite restaurant.
  • Join with friends to participate in a 5K walk or other fundraising event for a good cause.
  • Organize a book club with female friends and acquaintances.
  • Reconnect with a friend from the past – make the first call, send a card, find her on Facebook.
  • Send your friends a positive, uplifting message to build their confidence!
