Can there possibly be such a thing as having too many friends? Writing for the Personal Space column on Bravo TV, journalist Marianne Garvey discusses Taylor Swift’s “girl squad” phenomenon and asks whether she really can handle them all.

She interviewed The Friendship Doctor asking a set of interesting questions including this one. For example, she asks whether it is really possible to maintain close relationships with a large group of friends and if so, might there be any potential downsides?

She writes:

So we called the famous Irene S. Levine, Ph.D., friendship expert, professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, creator of The Friendship Blog, and author of Best Friends Forever: Surviving a Breakup With Your Best Friend, to better understand how one (Taylor) can possibly navigate so many friendships with ease.

PS: Is there such a thing as having too many friends?

Irene: “People differ in how many friends they want or need based on their personalities and life circumstances. For example, some people are extremely sociable and outgoing while others are more introverted, preferring to spend more time alone, with a spouse or sibling, or with close friends.”

  1. Nofriends says:

Friendships can be like a real estate bubble, you get more and more friends and people put more and more value on you and then the bubble eventually pops. What goes up must come down. It is impossible to keep that many female friends. Everyone wants to be friends with her because there are a lot of perks that come along with being friends with her. If I had 50 million followers on Instagram I’d be pretty popular too.
