The Friendship Blog: The Final Chapter

Let me start off with a big thank you to all the readers of this blog—both old and new.

Some of you have actually been here since The Friendship Blog was first launched in 2007. That was ten years ago!

If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you probably know that like stars or snowflakes, every friendship is unlike any other. Recognizing how complicated it can be for people to navigate that uncharted universe. I started the blog to fill that need. There was no other place on the Internet that offered advice on addressing the tricky dilemmas of making and keeping friends, and ending friendships that have run their course.

After 10 years (Yes, 10!), more than 2200 posts, 30,000 comments on posts, and more than 37,000 posts on the Forums, I’ve decided that I need to close down this site on June 1, 2017. Effective immediately, I won’t be able to answer any more questions.

This has been a wonderful journey but it has also been demanding in terms of the time and cost entailed in making sure the blog ran as smoothly as it did, both editorially and technically. Personally, I now feel stretched too thin in too many different directions as I start another online venture, GettingOnTravel, which is aimed at mid-life travelers. I hope you’ll join me there.

I wanted to express my sincere appreciation to the supportive community that this blog has engendered. Yes, I’ve dispensed a lot of advice but I’ve also learned so much from the heartfelt and intelligent comments you’ve posted.

Thanks for making this blog the great success it has been and joining me on this journey!

Wishing you the best of friendships, Irene

P.S. If you’re on Facebook, you can join The Friendship Blog Connection Page that has more than 1000 followers who are interested in talking about friendship.

Irene, thank you for creating this wonderful and one of a kind site. I haven’t been on here that long. I wish that I would’ve discovered this site a lot sooner than I did. I wish you the best of luck with your new travel site. The people that I have talked to on here have been wonderful. Thank you to those of you who responded to my posts. There are so many nice, insightful and intelligent people on here!

I’ll miss talking to people like Crystal Ball Gazer and a few other people! Thank you for sharing your stories and insight with me CBG. Can someone please send me the link to the FB page? I might create a FB page to keep in touch with people from here. I think that someone did send me the link, but I forgot where it’s posted now.

    I’ll miss this site!

    Hello Irene,
Instead of closing this site, is there any way you could pass over this site to someone else? I just discovered this site today and read how must help and support this site has brought to many people over the years. I would be open to work on this site, I am an LCSW.

    Thank you,

Oh, I feel so sad. I just discovered your blog and then I read your recent post. This year I just started my own blog because I saw the need for people to have practical advice and encouragement. Your blog has just the feel to it that I am trying/hoping to create at mine! Love it! Wish I had found you sooner:)

Hope you make many new memories as you step into your next adventure!

Thank you Irene. Your book and this site has helped me get over loosing a best friend and know that I am not alone. I’m so happy to have found this site before it shut down.

You are amazing and I wish you all the best.

  7. Mary says:

Irene, I wish you the very best and chime in that your blog has been a wonderful resource, and I so appreciate all that you have put into it over time.

  8. Marie says:

Could you upload all your blog posts onto one of those FREE servers?

There is SO much there – so many good posts that have taken a LONG time to write, that are still helping people 10 years after you wrote them – that it would be a waste to not put them somewhere.

Or maybe you could put a lot of them into a free ebook for people to download ….. download the WHOLE thng. Host it on a free site, because it has to be stored somewhere to be able to be downloaded.

But it would be a GREAT shame not to save everything you’ve done because it’s SO SO great 🙂

Thank you Irene, I learned so much and I hope my words helped people along the way. We all had things to say and share here and thank you for providing the forum. Will miss it! — Tammy

Thank you for all you have done, Irene! This blog has become a great resource of wisdom and advice on a topic that is very important in our lives and yet not covered enough in the media. I learned so much from this page and the forums. Many of the participants here had some great insight! I would be so sorry to see such a great source of knowledge just disappear. Is there any way to keep the blog up without updating it? It would be very sad to delete all the valuable information here.

  11. Susan M. says:

Maybe someone else would want to take over this blog(?)

  12. Olivia says:

I can’t believe I just found this wonderful website and now it is shutting down. This is a sounding board for many women and I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s post! I was looking into really diving into every post here some day. I too, am hoping that it will stay up for future reference.

    This website was priceless!!

I found your blog and read your book after my best friend ended our friendship. Much of the book was hard to read and accept and I struggled for a long time but have had to move on. I have appreciated your wisdom and the wisdom of your readers over these last five years. Thank you and best of luck. Mary

  18. Debbie says:

Congrats on 10 years! Just like a decision to leave a friendship behind is hard, so is leaving a blog. On to bigger and better.

  19. Shelby says:

Thanks for doing this as long as you did. It really was a great help to come & find things that could give a boost when feeling like friendships were befuddling me. I’m sure you’ll enjoy being able to focus more on your travels. I’ll have to check out the FB page and the new travel page.

  21. Jacqueline says:

The Friendship Blog will continue on Facebook, which can function on its own. But, it has come to an end on here. Irene still had to take care of the tech problems, (and remember, there were many, at times!) the financial side, as well as the editorials, and other stuff (stresses) we are not aware of. I am sure this was not an easy decision.

We all feel sad about this. But at least we can keep the legacy of The Friendship Blog going on FB.

    Hope to see you there!

The subject is so complex and relevant and applicable for anyone. So, while you will be missed, I do look forward to reading about midlife travel! Best wishes and best of luck.
