I don’t think it is necessary to be friends with your neighbours, but to be friendly with them makes a difference! I mostly enjoyed living in the streets where there was good social contact between people. Get together once in a while for coffee, a lunch, dinner. Give each other a helping hand. A friendly word… Knowing that they keep an eye on your property while you are gone. The best way to meet neighbours is introduce yourself when you move in, or when new people move in the street go say hello. Organise a summer BBQ for the street. Talk to people. Sometimes it’s easy, and you fit in straight away. Other times it’s hard… This time for me, it’s been the hard one. But I finally got more friendly with one neighbour. ANd we look after each other’s property when traveling. But also can count on each other eg. when car is broken down and need a ride, for babysitting, borrowing tools, drive me to the train station when traveling …

On the subject of friends, I always come back to a comment Jerry Seinfeld said, “People have room in their lives for about 5 friends, which most people have already. So it’s really hard to forge new friendships.”

This makes a lot of sense to me. Most people are friendly, willing to engage, but aren’t interested in developing deep true friendships.
